Soshiotsuki Fall/Winter 2026: Tailoring Without Compromise

Otsuki returned Japanese culture to Italy’s tailoring heartland, reframing the suits he once studied in homage to Armani.

Soshi Otsuki, the Chiba-born designer who launched his label in 2015 after Bunka Fashion College and Coconogacco, has long drawn from classical Japanese performing arts to inform his meticulous tailoring. His vision, precise yet expressive, has earned recognition from the 2019 Tokyo New Designer Award to the 2025 LVMH Prize, establishing a language of menswear that privileges intellect over spectacle.

For Fall/Winter 2026 at Pitti Uomo, Otsuki returned Japanese culture to Italy’s tailoring heartland, reframing the suits he once studied in homage to Armani and through the influx of Italian tailoring in 1980s Japan. Deconstructed fluidity merges with structural playfulness, producing clothes that communicate rather than perform.

The palette is restrained and considered. Muted greys form a reflective base; bronze, chocolate, and russet ground the line. Tweeds, pinstripes, sateen, and corduroy add texture. Collaborations quietly disrupt expectation. ASICS’ velvet tracksuits paired with taupe tailoring reimagine movement; other interventions nod to heritage and craft, creating dialogue between Japan and Italy.

The show began with a three-piece suit that felt both familiar and reconsidered. Relaxed, oversized, and slightly slouchy, they challenge the rigidity of Japanese tailoring. A light taupe double-breasted ensemble layered over a cardigan and baby-blue shirt hinted at subtle humor within rigorous tailoring.

Otsuki’s reinterpretation of the tuxedo maintains balance between structure and ease. Broad-shouldered shawl-lapel blazers paired with tailored trousers, alongside bias-cut Oxford shirts and neck scarves, replace formality with suggestion and motion. A textured grey suit with a wide-lapel jacket over voluminous trousers in an abstract, distressed pattern stands out as the centerpiece, its architectural proportions complementing the vaulted arches of Santa Maria Novella.

Bronze accents recur with precision. A pinstriped double-breasted suit with exaggerated legs modernizes traditional tailoring; a bronze leather jacket offers understated warmth. The oversized jumpsuit, wide-legged and cinched with a tan belt over a crisp white shirt, punctuated by a bold orange tie, combines minimalist architecture with restrained energy, adding vitality without disrupting the line.

Not every fabric succeeds. Corduroy occasionally weighs down silhouettes, muting the movement Otsuki otherwise choreographs with care. These moments register but do not compromise the collection’s authority.

Soshiotsuki's Fall/Winter 2026 presents tailoring for those fluent in its discipline, for whom proportion and gesture carry weight. Otsuki does more than show clothes; he articulates taste, legacy, and possibility, proving that tailoring can be expressive, precise, and intelligent.
