Shinyalozuka’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection began with a fall, a lost contact lens, a blurred plate of carbonara, and the strange pleasure of no longer seeing the world clearly. That anecdote could have stayed as backstage poetry, but Kozuka turned it into the collection’s entire visual system.

The show, Kozuka’s first on the Milan men’s calendar, carried the title-like rhythm of “watercolour path, watercolour path, watercolour path," suggesting a route walked many times, a familiar street made unfamiliar by altered vision. The designer’s references to Uta Barth and Rinko Kawauchi helped explain the atmosphere, where edges dissolved, light leaked across surfaces, and buildings and trees seemed to bleed into one another until the landscape became emotional.

Familiar menswear shapes anchored the collection, from long work coats and relaxed suits to pajama silhouettes, overshirts, bombers, Bermuda shorts, and wide trousers. Across these pieces, turquoise brushwork crept over pale garments like grass, water, feathers, or the wing of some imagined tropical bird. On a long shirtcoat, the blue-green texture gathered around the lower half as though the fabric had dragged through a garden, while on ivory tailoring, the same color disturbed the surface, turning a clean summer suit into something touched by weather.

The bird motif gave the collection its emotional lift, though not through a simple fantasy of flight. Sparrows appeared in embroidery, while wing-like shapes and abstract markings moved across the body, linking the idea of the bird to sound, childhood, and a whistling song remembered from youth. In several looks, those forms met city skylines, placing nature inside an urban memory.

Sheer organza, paper-thin nylon, and translucent overshirts and layered overpants sharpened the idea further, making clothing behave like atmosphere. A mint-parka billowed rather than protected, while a long pale shirt floated around the torso, revealing shorts and skin beneath. These pieces did not expose the body for provocation. They blurred it, making the wearer part of the same out-of-focus world that shaped the collection.

Stephen Jones’s headpieces pushed the show toward fable, but Kozuka’s hand kept it grounded. Hand-painted brushstrokes on duster coats, crinkled fabrics, patchwork surfaces, and sartorial wools stopped the collection from becoming too fragile, giving the craft a sense of dirt, movement, humor, and accident.

What made Spring/Summer 2027 compelling was its refusal to treat nostalgia as sentimentality. Kozuka’s “same window” idea, the Japanese phrase for alumni reunion, became the show’s thesis. Newness, he suggested, may not come from escaping the past. It may come from walking the same path again with a different perspective. In that sense, the collection was about freedom, yes, but not the freedom of flying away. It was the freedom of returning home and finally seeing it differently.
