Prabal Gurung’s Resort 2027 collection, titled First Light, treats sunrise as a moment of transition. This is not a collection drenched in obvious brightness. Instead, Gurung looks at the strange, delicate hours between darkness and day, when clothes still carry the memory of the night before but are already moving towards morning. 

Some pieces feel formal, almost deliberately composed, while others are sheer, loose, and liquid. Rather than working against each other, these two moods create the emotional rhythm of the season. A woman may begin the night in structure, but by morning something has softened. The jacket opens into transparency, the dress slips away from the body, the hemline becomes uneven, and the silhouette starts to breathe.

When it comes to colors, Gurung does not simply cover the collection in yellow and call it sunrise. Black appears as the hour before dawn, when the city is still half-asleep. Pale butter yellow suggests the first line of light. Powder blue arrives later, when the sky has cleared and the day has begun. This movement from darkness to blue gives the collection a sense of time passing.

The idea becomes more convincing when placed beside the collection’s references to early morning solitude and the atmospheric work of Saul Leiter. Like Leiter, Gurung seems interested in the private moment before the image is fully formed. His woman is not necessarily arriving at the event. She may be leaving it, existing before the photograph, before the day asks her to become someone again.

One of the clearest examples is a curved, collarless jacket that shapes the body without feeling severe. Underneath, an asymmetric sheer skirt interrupts the formality, making the look tailored in the process of being undone. It is a good example of Gurung’s strength this season: he allows structure to remain elegant without letting it become heavy.

Elsewhere, a one-shoulder powder blue column dress carries the ease of eveningwear after the evening has ended. A pale yellow halter dress moves with the softness of fabric catching air. A white layered dress, worn with a head covering and dark glasses, could have become too delicate, but the styling gives it a New York City attitude.

Some of the strongest looks feel as though they could travel from night into sunrise. The sunglasses, black hosiery, flat shoes, and veiled styling give the collection a sense of after-hours glamour, made for the walk outside after a long night when everything has loosened but nothing has disappeared.

First Light works best when Gurung stays in that in-between space. The collection understands morning not only as brightness but also as recovery, privacy, reflection, and return. Its most convincing moments happen when formal clothes begin to soften and when the first sign of daylight changes everything.
