Speake Marin unveiled a piece that feels like a clear statement of direction. The Ripples Kármán Line elevates the Maison’s collection by placing the focus squarely on transparency, technical discipline, and a more architectural vision of timekeeping. The Ripples collection has already established itself as a modern cornerstone for Speake Marin, defined by its integrated design and subtle asymmetry, particularly the small seconds at 1:30. With the Kármán Line, the framework is pushed into a more experimental universe—most notably through the introduction of a sapphire crystal dial, a first for the collection.

Sapphire Dial Architecture

The sapphire dial is not an aesthetic novelty; it fundamentally reshapes how the watch is perceived. It creates a sense of suspension, as though the indications are floating above the movement. Beneath this transparent surface are layers of Geneva stripes and sunray textures, treated with blue metallization and rhodium-plated finishes that shift dynamically with the light, giving the dial a constantly evolving visual depth.

Small Seconds Kármán

The small seconds, framed by a finely executed ring at 1:30, act as a visual anchor within this transparency. It nods to the brand’s historical design language without feeling referential or nostalgic. Surrounding this display, the minute flange adds another layer of depth, finished with an opaline microbeaded texture and a soft azure gradient inspired by the Kármán Line—the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space. 

Engineering Precision

This visual lightness is underpinned by rigorous engineering. The flange is secured using an under-set mechanical snap-fit system, avoiding adhesives or soldering entirely. It is an almost invisible technical detail, yet it reflects a broader philosophy where precision in construction is treated with the same importance as visual refinement and design clarity.

SMA06 Caliber Movement

Powering the watch is the SMA06 caliber, Speake Marin’s 13th in-house movement, developed at its Le Cercle des Horlogers facility. At just 2.5 mm thick, it is remarkably slim, yet operates at a high frequency of 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour). The integrated micro-rotor helps maintain this slender profile while ensuring efficient winding, allowing the movement’s architecture to remain visually coherent beneath the sapphire dial.

Unified Design

The case, dial, and movement are not treated as separate elements but as parts of a unified concept, with the sculptural Ripples case reinforcing continuity between exterior and interior. Ultimately, the Ripples Kármán Line explores thresholds—between opacity and transparency, tradition and innovation, engineering and artistry—capturing a confident vision of what modern haute horlogerie can be.
