Shanghai Tang has put a calico cat on a fried egg and entrusted it with the serious business of good fortune. That cat is Meow Meow, one of the motifs in Fitted Fortune, Shanghai Tang’s new collection co-created with photographer and visual artist Chen Man, alongside Chubby Flower among peonies and the winning King Bomb from the card game Guandan. These symbols appear at different volumes, from a cat embroidered on a jacket to gold kept inside a vest.

Cut from cashmere-silk in a familiar Harrington shape, the Meow Meow zipped jacket has a stand collar, ribbed cuffs and slanted welt pockets, with an embroidered patch at the chest and orange beneath the collar. Its sporting outline gives the playful image a place in an everyday wardrobe.

A textured wool-blend five-button jacket takes a different approach. Its mandarin collar and long button line establish the shape, while a lucky cat pin at the breast pocket adds a smaller note of wit. Another five-button jacket, cut from herringbone linen-cotton, reveals gold jacquard inside its collar, while a fitted linen-cotton vest opens to show a vivid gold lining. Shanghai Tang describes fortune as an inheritance, and these details give the idea somewhere to live within the clothes.

The knitwear broadens the collection’s proportions. A silk sweater falls from dropped shoulders into wide sleeves and a deep shawl collar, easing the line established by the jackets. A straight cashmere cardigan returns to the mandarin collar, making its five multicoloured frog buttons the focus. Orange beneath its collar recalls the flash on the Harrington, connecting two pieces with otherwise different characters.

Fitted Fortune’s menswear gives good fortune several convincing forms, from a Harrington that places Meow Meow in a casual setting to five-button jackets with lucky pins and hidden lining. Chen Man’s symbols bring humour to the collection, but each piece has a clear identity of its own. The wearer can choose the embroidered cat one day and keep the gold lining for another.
