It’s official—Kapital is now part of the LVMH squad, but is anyone really surprised? LVMH has long had a knack for acquiring brands with unique identities and immense potential, and Kapital certainly fits the bill. The news of the acquisition by LVMH-backed investment firm L Catterton only came to light recently (all thanks to Highsnobiety!), but it marks a significant moment for the brand and its growing influence in the global fashion scene.

A Journey Rooted In American Denim
Kapital’s story began in the 1980s, when founder Toshikiyo Hirata, a Karate instructor at the time, developed a deep admiration for American denim while teaching in the United States. Upon returning to Japan, he set out to create his own line of denim, driven by a desire to blend American styles with Japanese craftsmanship. In 1984, Hirata opened his first factory, followed shortly by a vintage and denim shop in Kojima—an area in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture, famously known as the country's "Denim Capital."
The DNA Of Kapital: Americana With A Twist
Today, Kapital is known for its unique take on denim, workwear, and Americana-inspired fashion. The brand has garnered a dedicated following, thanks to its commitment to high-quality craftsmanship, eclectic designs, and limited-run collections that has a sense of both nostalgia and innovation.
Named after its hometown of Kojima, the brand heavily inspired from mid-century American workwear but reinterprets it through traditional Japanese production techniques. This combo results in garments that feel authentic and rugged, but with an unmistakable, idiosyncratic twist. The aesthetic is best described as eclectic, with a focus on handcraft and bespoke details.

A Global Footprint With Local Flavor
Kapital’s headquarters in Kojima reflect its strong ties to Japanese heritage, but the brand has since grown far beyond its local beginnings. Under the guidance of Kiro and Toshiyoko Hirata, Kapital now has over fifteen physical stores across Japan, each uniquely designed to reflect the culture and traditions of its surrounding region. Internationally, the brand has gained prominence, with select global retailers carrying Kapital’s distinct offerings.
Denim With Character
No discussion of Kapital is complete without acknowledging its signature indigo denim. Often intentionally distressed, Kapital’s denim often appears as though it has been worn for years, giving each piece an authentic, vintage feel. This approach speaks to the brand’s love for reimagining worn-in Americana—imbuing each item with a unique character and story.
Kapital is also known for its playful, sometimes ironic take on traditional garment design. Pockets are often placed in unconventional positions, and irregular adjusters, buttons, and other quirky details. These intentional oddities are part of what makes Kapital’s pieces so captivating and sought after, adding an element of surprise to its garments.

Where To Find Kapital In The Philippines
For Filipino fashion enthusiasts looking to own a piece of Kapital, there are a few options. While the brand doesn't have a direct retail presence in the Philippines, those traveling to Japan can find Kapital in stores across the country. Alternatively, select online platforms offer international shipping for those eager to add Kapital’s one-of-a-kind pieces to their wardrobes. Below are some of the retailers:
Fashiola.ph has Kapital pieces on their website, however we are not sure if they are reliable. So please shop wisely!
Kapital Prices
The prices of their products are not cheap! Reflecting the brand’s dedication to exceptional craftsmanship and small-batch production, Kapital’s pieces sit comfortably in the premium category. For example, a pair of their signature indigo denim jeans typically runs between 16,276 PHP - 43,563 PHP with certain special editions or heavily distressed styles pushing the price even higher, sometimes upwards of 213,808 PHP. Similarly, their outerwear, including hand-dyed indigo jackets and one-of-a-kind coats, can easily hit 20,704 PHP or more. Lastly, accessories, from hats to bags, are priced in the 2,393 PHP - 47,812 PHP, depending on the materials and details involved.

Our Thoughts
It’s certainly a bold move for LVMH to acquire a brand given the current state of the luxury market. Consumers tightening their belts amid rising prices, and many are questioning whether these luxury goods are truly worth the cost. This shift could pose a risk, especially if economic conditions don’t improve or if luxury brands continue to raise their prices. On the bright side, David Dolan of Reuters reported that tourists are flocking to Japan to snap up high-end clothing and handbags at a discount, thanks to the weak yen. LVMH is clearly seizing this opportunity, looking to capitalize on Japan’s growing luxury spending despite global uncertainties.
